A church built around a burial place

Saint Servatius Basilica stands on Vrijthof. The site developed around the tomb traditionally associated with Servatius, and pilgrimage shaped the church over centuries. The present Romanesque building replaced earlier structures; its heavy masonry is quite different from the pointed vaults of Dominicanen.

Choose time for the interior

The crypt and treasury make this more than a quick exterior stop. Religious objects include the Servatius Shrine. Give the visit a place in your morning rather than treating it as something to squeeze in before lunch. The church remains in religious use, so tourist access and services need to fit around each other.

Find the entrance before crossing the square

Visitor information lists the entrance at Keizer Karelplein 6. Check admission arrangements and holiday exceptions through the basilica listing before coming. If you arrive during a service or a closure, use the time for the surrounding streets and return later if your schedule permits.

Continue from Vrijthof

For a morning centred on buildings, continue to Dominicanen. For exhibitions, look at the programme at Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof on the same square. Choose one of those as the next substantial stop; leaving space between interiors makes the city easier to take in.
