Start with a slice of vlaai

Limburgse vlaai is a filled tart with a yeast-raised base. Fruit versions include cherry and apricot; rice filling is another familiar option. Choose from what the bakery has made that day. If there are two of you, ordering different slices is a better plan than trying to settle the whole question from the display case.

Bisschopsmolen at Stenenbrug 3 is an easy stop on a Jekerkwartier walk. The bakery works with regional grain and makes spelt vlaai. Look around the side for the mill wheel, then continue to Helpoort and the park. Its regular closing day is Monday, so do not build a Monday breakfast around it.

For allergies, ask about the particular filling and dough. Spelt is wheat and contains gluten. A bakery selling one vegan option does not make every slice vegan; the counter staff can tell you what is available.

Look for the waterwheel

The mill is part of the reason to make this stop. Walk around the side to see the wheel, then continue through the Jekerkwartier. The visit works as a quick bakery purchase as well as a longer break.

Choose from the counter

Cherry, apricot and other fillings make choosing a slice part of the visit. If you are sharing, order different flavours rather than trying to settle on one for the whole table.

Ask the staff about the dough and filling if you have dietary requirements. Spelt contains gluten; the name does not indicate a gluten-free alternative.

Continue to Helpoort

From Stenenbrug, include the streets of the Jekerkwartier and continue towards Helpoort. You can follow the walls through the park afterwards or return to the centre for lunch.

If the bakery is a priority, check its opening day before fixing the route. Monday is its regular closing day.
