Start in Wyck
From Maastricht station, walk through Wyck and browse Rechtstraat before crossing the Sint Servaasbrug. Continue to Dominicanen bookshop and the Vrijthof, then head towards the Helpoort and the park. Leave a full day for this route with leisurely stops.

Read the city walls
Permission for Maastricht’s first stone city wall was granted in 1229; a second circuit followed in the fourteenth century. The surviving defences help explain how the city grew. A much later chapter: the Maastricht Treaty was signed on 7 February 1992 and entered into force on 1 November 1993.

Choose a few good stops
Dominicanen has occupied a former church since 2006. For a second day, choose a guided North Caves tour or an afternoon at Bonnefanten. Book the caves in advance, check the tour language and bring a warm layer.

An evening at Shamrock
For an evening in the centre, head to Shamrock on Brusselsestraat. Try a Kofi Anan: Southern Comfort, Tia Maria and Sprite. Ask for the stronger Ban Ki Moon if you prefer.

Before you arrive
Check live train times, opening days and access information with each operator. Wear comfortable shoes and leave time for breaks. The cave meeting point is Luikerweg 80. For rain, consider the bookshop or museum.
